Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture Treatment Clinic in Mississauga – Curezone Physiotherapy is one of the registered acupuncture clinics in Mississauga providing services in the heartland, Mississauga. It is a form of alternative medicine in which thin needles are inserted into the body and is one of the most important components of traditional Chinese medicine. There concept is that all the meridians flow smoothly and any blockage or obstruction in the pathways leads to diseases or illness. Acupuncture helps in correcting imbalances of energy by removing any blockage or obstruction in the pathways in the body. More than 2,500 years ago, acupuncture has been used traditionally to prevent and treat disease, as well as to improve general health. They stimulate the release of endorphins – the body’s natural pain-relieving neurohormones – through the insertion of needles into specific acupuncture points to encourage natural healing. They have also proved beneficial for reducing fatigue and addictions, and for promoting overall well-being.

Therapeutic effects include:

  • Pain relief
  • Increased energy
  • Improved mood

What to Expect On your first session Of Acupuncture Treatment?

After the initial acupuncture consultation and assessment, the physiotherapist explains the risk and side effects with a written informed consent. The needles are placed in very specific locations. Upon insertion, one may feel a momentary sharp or stinging sensation; however, many report they don’t even feel the majority of the insertions. It is common to experience a deep ache for a short time in some of the points.  The needles are usually left in place for 15 to 20 minutes and then removed. Following an acupuncture treatment, practitioners will usually reassess the client.

Acupuncture is frequently used in conjunction with “cupping,” a technique designed to increase blood flow to a particular area of concern by using vacuum cups to create suction and promote blood flow to the surface of the skin. Cupping is a also one of the method used by our Therapists at Curezone Physiotherapy Heartland, Mississauga to stimulate the acupuncture points. The cups are often placed on the back, neck, and shoulders or the site of pain. Cupping may cause temporary bruising and soreness, depending upon the degree of suction created by the vacuum and the level of internal stagnation.

Cupping is often used for back pain, sprains, soft tissue injuries and etc. Acupuncture can be used effectively with other therapies including various forms of massage, chiropractic, osteopathic manipulation, as well as different movement therapies such as Tai chi and Qigong.

How many treatments will I need after the assessment?

The frequency and the number of treatments differ from person to person. Some people experience dramatic relief in the first treatment. For complex or chronic conditions, one to two treatments per week for 2 to three weeks may be recommended. For acute problems,   usually 3 to 4 sessions may be required. An individualized treatment plan that includes the expected number of treatments will be discussed during your initial visit.

Are There Any Side Effects of Acupuncture?

Common side effects include soreness and minor bleeding or bruising skin rashes, allergic reactions, pain, nausea, dizziness, fainting, or infections where the needles were inserted. Single-use, disposable needles are now the practice standard, so the risk of infection is minimal. Not everyone is a good candidate for acupuncture. You may be at risk of complications if you:

  • Have a bleeding disorder.Your chances of bleeding or bruising from the needles increase if you have a bleeding disorder or if you’re taking blood thinners.
